Principal’s Report

  • We will be checking grades for eligibility and senior privileges on Wednesday, October 29. Students in Gr. 6-12 with a failing grade at this time will be ineligible to compete in extra-curricular activities until Wednesday, November 19. For clarification, this includes all NDHSAA sponsored activities (athletics/fine arts) as well as other school clubs/organizations that participate in competitive events.  
  • At the State “B” Cross-Country meet in Jamestown on Friday the girls team placed 20th (out of 55) and the boys team 27th (out of 61). Individually, Faith Krebs placed 70th, Ella Herrig 83rd, and Charles Norby 94th! Congratulations to all team members and the coaches, Lindsay George and Nicole Willis, on a fine season! 
  • Juniors and seniors taking Dual Credit or Career Impact Academy courses next semester should have all forms turned in to the office by Friday, October 31. 
  • Thank you to all who attended and supported our Music Department at the fall concerts last week! 
  • Congratulations to the Tommie football team on a successful season! The team fell 18–8 on Saturday in a hard-fought game against HCV. Thank you to the players and coaches for their hard work, dedication, and commitment throughout the season! Also, thank you to the many supporters who traveled to Hillsboro and cheered on the Tommies!
  • Nationally renowned speaker, Mr. Terrance Talley, will present to our Gr. 6-12 students on Thursday afternoon.  
  • Good luck to Mrs. Hylen, and our FCCLA students, at their District Leadership meetings in Grand Forks on Wednesday!
  • High and middle school students are welcome to wear Halloween costumes on Friday, as long as they are appropriate for school. The NHS students will be awarding a prize for the “Best Costume” in each grade!
  • The Drama Department will present its One Act Play, Brian the Comet, to the public on Tuesday, November 4 at 7:00pm. A freewill donation will be accepted at the door. 
  • Thank you to Mason Applegren, Logan Miller, Caden Kurz, and Caden Penas for stocking the pop coolers in the concession stand last week! 
  • Juniors who are interested in earning study hall privileges for the second semester should visit with Mr. Schwabe or Mr. Schwab about different ways to earn volunteer hours. 
  • Our middle school students will have their Trimester 1 classes conclude on Friday, November 14. Students should be checking PowerSchool to find out their Trimester 2 classes. 
  • Next week is Red Ribbon Week at THS/MS!

It is with great pride that I welcome you to Thompson High/Middle School! THS/MS is a 6-12 school that is home to over 350 students who are educated by 28 highly qualified instructors. THS/MS is connected to Thompson Elementary School and together we have a K-12 enrollment of approximately 700 students. Thompson, ND is a bedroom community 7 miles south of Grand Forks that has a population of around 1100. 

The goal of our staff is to develop life-long learners who, through the course of middle/high school, will develop the academic, social, and workplace skills necessary to compete in the 21st century global economy. 

Academic course offerings at THS range from the required courses in English, Math, Science, and Social Studies, to elective departments such as Business, Family & Consumer Science, Health Careers, Foreign Language and Technology & Engineering Education. THS is also a member of the Grand Forks Area Career Impact Academy which provides our students the opportunity to take courses such as Precision Agriculture, Automotives, Building Trades, Construction Essentials, Aviation, Sports Medicine, EMS, Robotics, Culinary Arts,  Programming Essentials, and Civil Engineering/Architecture. Qualified students are also able to take dual credit courses (Advanced Composition, College Algebra, Psychology, Sociology, Speech, and Intro to Education/Special Education) allowing them to earn college credit. We are excited about the opportunities we provide our students and are always striving to improve.   

Extra-curricular activities offered at THS include: Football, Volleyball, Cross-Country, Basketball, Wrestling, Swimming & Diving, Gymnastics, Track, Baseball, Softball, Hockey, Trap Shooting, and Golf. Fine arts activities include Band, Choir, Drama, Jazz Band, Pep Band, Drumline, Summer Theatre, and Speech. THS also offers various clubs to our students which include: FCCLA, FBLA, SADD, TSA, Math Counts, Academic Challenge, JETS, NHS, Student Council, and Yearbook. 

I am currently in my 31st year in education and 22nd as a high school principal.  My wife, Collette, and I have four children; Calen - 25, Cadyn - 23, Sydney - 19, Jena - 17
